Teething Puppies 2.0

We love doing our little educational blogs and this one is a deeper dive onto our post from early August about teething puppies! When we first wrote this, Aurora was at the tail end of teething - she lost all the baby shark teeth, and all her adult ones were finishing eruptions!

Did you know that some dogs can have those baby ones get stuck, and actually need medical intervention? Fun Fact, these are called deciduous!

Let’s get all technical for moment with some teething timelines:

There are a few different stages to the teething process. If you’ve welcomed a new furry friend into your life, we encourage you to learn about teething development and be prepared with suitable chewies!

2-4 weeks

A pup’s first set of teeth will gradually start to appear from around two weeks old. The incisors (the small teeth at the front of a dog's mouth) are first to come through, followed by canine teeth (the pointy teeth on either side of their mouth) and finally, premolars and molars (their back teeth).

5-6 weeks

By the end of week six, your puppy should have around 28 milk teeth. These little chompers will usually be needle sharp, so watch your fingers!

3-4 months

At around 3-4 months, puppies start lose their milk teeth. During this stage, their adult teeth also start to emerge. This can be a bit uncomfortable for your pup! Much the same as a teething toddler..

6+ months

By the time they reach six months old or so, your puppy should be the proud owner of a full set of 42 permanent adult teeth!

Some dogs actually have developmental changes and are missing some of their adult teeth! Our Eric is missing a pre-molar on both sides of his upper jaw!

Other times, we occasionally see young dogs with some baby teeth left behind! If not removed with surgical intervention, they can actually cause some serious issues as the pup continues to grow and age.

Suitable Chews for your teething puppy:

8-12 weeks

Sheep Ears and Pig Snouts: these are the softer options of our chew collection. Fresh baby teeth are not strong and their jaws are also developing strength so we want something that provides the chew satisfaction but without the difficultly level!

12-14 weeks

Beef Ears, Buffalo hide and Turkey Necks: these chews are longer lasting, soften as they chew and give a shredding outlet too!! The buffalo hide also has add bonus of texture elements with a nice furry side

16 weeks +

By this age they have developed their big chompers that are known as Molars! These teeth are now at a suitable age for the more harder chews like Cow Hoofs, Turkey Wing Tips and Marrow Chews!

This is just a rough idea of chewy options! Every breed and individual pup will have a preference so variety is key and it’s quite fun playing around to see what options your puppy loves! Carrots, cucumbers, frozen bananas and even cooked, but then frozen sweet potato and pumpkin can also make wonderful chews!

Keep in mind if something is too hard, your puppy will lose interest and not build those wonderful connections to the deliciousness and satisfaction outlet of a good, edible chew! As always, send us a message if you’re after some additional guidance on what might be best suited to your teething babe, we are always up for a chat about the little treasures!
